I. Ann Chance, age 90, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Marshallton, Delaware, on June 12, 1935, to the late John Wilkinson and Lillian Haigh, Ann was one of five children. She was preceded in death by her siblings William “Billy” Haigh, Eloise Dougherty, and John “Butch” Wilkinson. She was also preceded in death by her beloved son Barry David “Peanut” Adkins, a son lost in childbirth, her first husband Curtis Adkins, and her second husband Thomas A. “TC” Chance.
She is survived by her dear sister Margaret “Doll” Wilkinson, and her loving children: Curtis Roger Adkins (Teresa), John Randall “Randy” Adkins, Raymond Douglas “Dougie” Adkins, Richard Donald “Dicky” Adkins (Donna), Thomas Axel “Tucker” Chance (Nancy), Ann Marie “Anna” Steppich (Tony). She was the proud grandmother of 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren, who were truly her heart, her joy, and her legacy. Ann was a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, great-aunt, cousin, and friend to many. Her presence left a lasting imprint on all who knew her.
Ann’s greatest joy in life was family—especially children. She had an incredible way with them, always making them feel seen, safe, and loved. Her home was the gathering place in every season, filled with laughter, warmth, and unforgettable memories. Nearly every child in the neighborhood learned to swim in her pool, and her summer parties were legendary. Ann’s personality sparkled—both in spirit and in style. In her later years, she developed a special love for all things pink and glittery. Her sense of humor, fierce love, and unshakable strength remained until the very end.
In true Ann fashion, she thoughtfully planned her farewell. Services have been entrusted to Doherty Funeral Home and her family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate her life on Friday, July 11th, 2025 at the Executive Banquet & Conference Center, 205 Executive Drive, Newark, DE, 19702, where a service will begin at 1PM. A luncheon and time for sharing will immediately follow.
In honor of Ann, please wear a touch of pink—something sparkly if you have it. No need to buy anything new; she simply wanted joy, love, and laughter in the room.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Delaware Hospice, whose care and compassion were invaluable in her final days. Donations can be made by visiting: www.delawarehospice.org
