Helen (Gawel) Wisniewski, 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 21, 2021.
Born in Wilmington, Delaware on March 29, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Frances (Piersacazik) Gawel and the wife of Eugene E. Wisniewski, who passed away on December 13, 2015, after a marriage lasting 66 years.
Helen graduated from P.S. Dupont High School and then continued her education at the Wilmington General Hospital School of Nursing. During a 44 year career, she proudly worked in the Labor and Delivery Department of the former Wilmington Medical Center, currently Christiana Care, rising to the level of supervisor of the OBGYN nursing unit. Her unwavering commitment and diligence to the nursing profession earned the respect of her peers and the doctors she served. In her retirement, Helen generously volunteered with Delaware Hospice.
Helen enjoyed spending summer days at the beach in Avalon, crabbing, reading, and cooking, especially creating delicious ethnic Polish dishes. She was the happiest when in the company of her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Helen will be dearly missed by her daughters, Joan O’Donnell, Deborah Kelly, Lori (Anthony) Vasile, and Eugenia (Charles) Weber; her sister, Joan Whitney; her grandchildren Kathleen, Shannon, Thomas, Nicholas, Gabriella, Anthony, Helena and Madeline; and her great grandchildren Corey, Quinlan, Barrett, Edith, Shannon and Finnegan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in her memory at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville, Delaware on Friday, April 30 at 10:30AM, to be followed immediately by interment in the parish cemetery alongside her beloved Eugene.
Services will be conducted in compliance with mandatory COVID-19 directives which require wearing facial covering and maintaining social distancing at the church and cemetery.
