Adela Helen Enrile Petainek, age 88, of Newark, formerly of Himamaylan, Philippines, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, May 4, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Helen dedicated many years of service to the State of Delaware, first working as a security guard at the University of Delaware and later serving as a correctional officer with the Delaware Department of Corrections. She was known for her strength, independence, and caring spirit.
Helen found great joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved hiking, swimming, and spending time outdoors with her beloved dogs. She enjoyed watching game shows and Judge Judy, dancing with her grandchildren, and visiting her favorite local casino, Delaware Park, where she especially loved playing the slot machines. Most of all, Helen treasured the time she spent with her family, whose love and companionship meant everything to her.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Helmut “Joe” Petainek of Newark, DE; her sons, Albert “Lee” Howell (Amy Norris) and Robert Howell (Marion); her grandchildren, Patrick Howell (Rebecca Clark), Peyton Howell, and Pheby Howell; and her great-grandchildren, Catherine Clark, Brayden Howell, Benjamin Howell, and Theodore Howell.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, May 14, 2026 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 15 Gender Rd., Newark, DE 19711, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 AM. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE 19808.
