Helen C. (Matyniak) Gawinski, 95, peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, April 6, 2025. Born in Wilmington on January 11, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Cecilia (Gawronski) Matyniak.
Helen was a graduate of Wilmington High School and was a lifelong member of St. Hedwig Parish.
Her husband of 60 years, Edward J. Gawinski, passed away on December 27, 2016.
Helen is survived by her daughters, Terry Ann Episcopo (Eric), Karen Gawinski and Diane Gawinski Cathell; her granddaughters, who were her pride and joy, Helene Episcopo (Brandon Walker) and Julia Episcopo; her great granddaughters, Madeline and Anne Walker; her brother-in-law, Richard Permar.
In addition to her husband, Helen was predeceased by her sisters, Frances Miklasiewicz (Harry), Dolores Long (John) and Bernice Permar.
The family would like to extend their deepest thanks and appreciation to the staff at Kentmere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the loving care given to Helen. Special thanks also to Richard and Joyce for being wonderful neighbors and friends to Helen.
Family and friends are invited to visit at St. Hedwig Church, Linden and S. Harrison Streets, Wilmington on Wednesday, April 16 from 9:30 – 10:45AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM. Interment will be held privately, at a later date, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Helen may be made to St. Hedwig Church, 408 S. Harrison Street, Wilmington, DE 19805.
