Gerald H. Winnington, Sr., lovingly known as Jerry, age 82, of Bear, DE, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 29, 2021.
Born in Wilmington, DE, Jerry was the son of the late Mildred E. (West) and William P. Winnington, Sr. He was a graduate of Conrad High School Class of 1958. After graduation, Jerry joined the United States Marine Corp, where he was in the reserves from 1959 through 1968. In 1960, Jerry met the love of his life and life long partner, Sandra Hutchins, whom he married in July of 1962. From 1958 to 1961, Jerry was a radio operator for the Delaware State Police at Troop #2. In 1962, he was appointed as a recruit Trooper with the Delaware State Police. After 20 years of service, Jerry retired in 1981 as Staff Captain. He was a life member of the Association of Retired State Police.
After retiring from the Delaware State Police, Jerry began a second career at JP Morgan Bank. From 1981 until he retired in 2011, he worked as Facilities Management Project Manager.
Family was the center of Jerry’s life. He enjoyed spending summers at the beach, where he loved fishing with his wife and children at the Indian Landing on Rehoboth Bay and Indian River. Jerry enjoyed traveling along the Eastern Coast, where some of his favorite family vacations were annual summer trips to Myrtle Beach and Williamsburg. He was a doting Poppop, who treasured spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In his leisure time, Jerry was quite the handyman. He enjoyed doing many projects around the house and yard work.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Sandra L. Winnington; his daughter, Lisa Marciniszyn (Robert); his son, William Winnington; his nine grandchildren, Jessica Stewart (Greg), Gregg Winnington, Shannon Winnington, Kayla Bennett (Daniel), Kyle Marciniszyn, Meghan Marciniszyn, Corri Winnington, Carly Winnington, and Casey Winnington; and his three great-grandchildren, Connor Stewart, Daniel Krause and Lacey Krause. He was predeceased by his son, Gerald H. Winnington, Jr.; his parents, Mildred and William P. Winnington, Sr.; and his brothers, Donald Winnington and William Winnington.
Family and friends may visit beginning at 10 AM on Wednesday, October 6 at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808, where a Celebration of Jerry’s Life will begin at 11 AM. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware State Police Museum, 1425 N. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.
