Gerald J. “Jerry” Carney, age 72, of Claymont, DE, formerly of Linwood, PA died peacefully on April 2, 2025, at Christiana Care – Wilmington Hospital in the presence of family.
Jerry graduated from Chichester High School, Class of 1970 and thereafter went to work quickly developing into an electrician. He used those skills at the former Phoenix Steel, then at Congoleum, and finally for 30 years at the Dupont Experimental Station.
Jerry lived by the idea that anything worth doing was worth doing right and that applied to both his job and his outside interests. He was a long-time member of a beer making club in New Castle and traveled to Germany with the group. His lifelong love of the Pocono Mountains led him to build a second home along the Susquehanna River where he enjoyed many vacations, long weekends and spending time with his grandchildren. He followed the Philly sports teams and was especially passionate about the Eagles, happy about their Super Bowl wins and still cursing Reid and McNabb for failing to bring us prior championships.
Jerry was predeceased by his father, Hugh Carney, and his mother, Alberta Carney (nee Rothermel). He is survived by his daughter, Megan Fromal (Michael); stepdaughter, Barbra Harding (Jerry); stepson, Terry McGuire; his nine grandchildren; his brother, Dennis Carney (Mary); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025 from 10AM-11AM at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808. A remembrance service for Jerry will begin at 11AM. Interment will immediately follow in Lawn Croft Cemetery, Linwood, PA.
