George J. Wascovich, 77, of Landenberg, PA peacefully passed away in the comfort of his home on Wednesday, October 7, 2020. Born in Scranton, PA on September 26, 1943, he was one of three sons of the late George and Mildred (Elechko) Wascovich.
George was a 1961 graduate of Scranton Technical High School and earned an Associate’s Degree in business from Goldey-Beacom College. He was employed as a conductor with the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, Conrail, Amtrak and Norfolk Southern and enjoyed 20 years of retirement, during which time he loved traveling, playing golf and spending time with his grandchildren.
A proud and patriotic American, George dutifully served our country in the United States Navy as a Naval Seal, having been stationed with Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) 21. He was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of UDT/Seal and enjoyed the yearly gatherings with his fellow members. He was also a member of the UDT Seal Museum in Fort Pierce, FL, a life member of the VFW Post 7234 in Ocean View, DE and a life member of the American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro. In addition, George was a member of the Elks Club #2645 in Ocean City, MD.
George is survived by his wife of more than 55 years, Josephine “Joanne” (DeNapoli) Wascovich; his daughters, Rhonda Swarter (Charles) and Marguerite Wascovich; his grandchildren, Teresa, Anthony and Juliana Leo; his brothers, Mark Wascovich and Wayne Wascovich (Pat).
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Tuesday, October 20 from 9:30-11:00AM. Funeral services will begin at 11:00AM, followed by interment in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
