Esther D. Hagerty

Esther D. Hagerty, 82, of Newark, Delaware passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Monday, October 20, 2025.  Born in Wilmington on January 12, 1943, she was a beloved daughter of the late Melvin and Martha (Durborow) Hagerty. 

Esther was a CB radio enthusiast who was well known for her handle, “Hoot”.  She loved Elvis, enjoyed dancing and wearing multiple rings on each of her fingers. Though she faced challenges related to her special needs, she embraced life with determination and joy.  In her younger years, she found purpose working at the Opportunity Center, and she taught herself to knit, crochet, and play the piano—showcasing her creativity and resilience.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Joanne Hagerty Giroud. 

Esther is survived by her sister, Gail Hunt; her nephews, Steve Reynolds (Crissy), Vernon Giroud Jr. (Karen) and Dean Giroud (Kim); her great nieces and nephews, Jessica Brown, Christopher Giroud, Caroline Giroud, Andrea Reynolds, Stephen Reynolds and Kyle Reynolds along with their respective children and other family members.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Monday, October 27 from 10:00 – 11:00AM.  Funeral services will begin at 11:00AM, immediately followed by interment at Silverbrook Cemetery, 3300 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington.
