Elwood Eveland Sr. Obituary

Elwood (Woody) T. Eveland, Sr. died comfortably at his home with family by his side on the evening of May 8, 2022. Elwood was born on March 8, 1934 in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, the third of eight children, to Francis and Edna Eveland. On December 26, 1953, he married the love of his life, Janeann. After graduating from Coal Township High School in 1952, he joined the U.S. Army, serving in Austria and Italy. Upon discharge, Elwood started his career as a lineman with the Pennsylvania Railroad, steadily rising until his retirement as Assistant Chief Engineer for Communications and Signals with Conrail. He and Janeann then split their time between their home in Pike Creek and their home in Sussex County, enjoying summers at the beach. Elwood was an active Freemason at the Philadelphia lodge, achieved Master Mason and was accepted to the order of the Knights Templar.  He was a dog lover, especially Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, and leaves behind the latest, Curleybelle, to take good care of Janeann. Elwood was  an avid Assateague Island camper, along with his brother Paul, and their children can attest to their love of that primitive exercise. He enjoyed fishing from the beach and the Cape Henlopen pier and taught his grandchildren how to catch fish and crabs. He grew up hunting with his father and his brothers and enjoyed duck and goose hunting with his sons. Elwood also truly enjoyed giving his grandchildren detailed technical explanations to questions about many mechanical topics and most of the time they included detailed drawings.

Mr. Eveland is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Janeann M. Eveland, his daughter, Heather A. Scott (Jason) of Kingwood, Texas and his son, Elwood T. Eveland, Jr. (Susan) of Pike Creek. He is survived by 5 grandchildren, their spouses and 8 great grandchildren, Barry J. Eveland, Jr. (Lauren), Charlotte, Randal Eveland (Elizabeth), Jack, Alex and Nolan, Jamison Eveland, Sr. (Emily), Jamison, Jr., Eric Eveland (Danielle), Molly and Riley, and Aubrey Eveland (Levi Moore), Peyton. Mr. Eveland loved his family and the visits of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in his final days gave him great comfort.

Mr. Eveland is survived by his brothers, Paul Eveland, Norman Eveland (Jessi) and Wayne Eveland (Sue). He was predeceased by his son, Barry J. Eveland, Sr., his brothers Daniel, James and Gary Eveland, his sister Esther Seroskie, sisters-in-law Theresa, Lois and Nancy, and brother-in-law Daniel Seroskie.

On Sunday, May 15, funeral services will be held at 3:00PM at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, Delaware 19808 where family and friends may call from 2:00-3:00PM prior to the service.
