Elizabeth Jean “Betsy” Murphy, 76, a lifelong resident of the Wilmington area, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at Millcroft following a long battle with dementia and cancer. Daughter of the late Joseph K. Murphy, Sr. and Catherine (Gracie) Murphy, she was born on February 19, 1948.
Betsy attended St. Matthew’s Grade School in Newport and was a 1966 graduate of St. Elizabeth’s High School. Following her graduation from Goldey-Beacom College, Betsy began a 46 year career with the DuPont Company. Over the years she enjoyed many trips abroad, especially Ireland and Scotland, her mother’s birthplace. She also enjoyed playing bridge with co-workers and her Stoney Batter community. Betsy enjoyed spending time at Delaware Park Casino, where everybody knew her name. Betsy was blessed to have had so many wonderful friends in her life, some going back as far as first grade. Their kindness and concern for her over the past 3 years meant so much to her family. Their visits, dinners out, comforting words and beautiful flowers …. all lifted her spirit.
Betsy is survived by her siblings, Daniel (Rosanne) Murphy, Margaret (Michael) Casey, Joseph (Kathy) Murphy, Victoria (Michael) Murphy-Green and Matthew (Judy) Murphy. She is also survived by 15 nieces and nephews, and 19 great nieces and great nephews.
Family and friends may visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Saturday, February 15 from 10:00 – 11:30AM. Interment will be held privately.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Millcroft Senior Living, especially Michael, Rona and Toni, as well as Elaine at Compassionate Care Hospice.
