Edward "Sonny" Downs

Edward “Sonny” Downs, age 96 of Lewes, DE, and formerly of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 2, 2023.

He was born in Wilmington, son of the late Edward and Katherine (Galloway) Downs; served honorably in the US Army and with the Merchant Marines; and worked his entire life, starting at a young age. Sonny worked with his father as a milkman; worked in air freight; owned and operated a garbage business; owned and operated a mushroom farm; and for the last 20-plus years, he owned and operated a landscaping business, cutting lawns as recently as a few weeks ago.

Ed is survived by his son, Stephen (Sally); his sister, Katherine; his grandchildren, Stephen, Jr. (Deborah), Eddie, Kimberly Gregory (Randy), and William (Christine); his 19 great-grandchildren; his nephew, Michael Lynn (Sheila), and their children, Cameron, Morgan, and Casey; as well as several members of his extended family.

In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Winifred, in 2010.

A funeral service will be celebrated at 11:30am on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where family and friends may visit beginning at 10:30am. Interment will be held in Cathedral Cemetery.
