Edward Szczerba, Sr. Obituary

Edward W. Szczerba Sr., age 81, of Hockessin, DE, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 20, 1944, in Wilmington, Delaware, Edward was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Edward was the cherished son of Joseph P. and Cecilia (Fraczkowski) Szczerba. He attended St. Hedwig’s School before graduating from Salesianum High School in 1962, where he was a First Team All-State basketball player and the captain of a state championship team. In the same year, he was honored as Boy of the Year by the Boys Club of Delaware. Edward continued his basketball career on an athletic scholarship at the University of Delaware, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1966. Following college he served in the Delaware Army National Guard.  His love for sports remained a constant throughout his life, as he was an avid bowler and enjoyed playing softball and basketball.

Edward dedicated 31 years to DuPont as a Senior Systems Specialist before spending his final four years with Accenture. He began his career in computer programming in 1966 and witnessed firsthand the remarkable evolution of technology. His strong work ethic and commitment were admired by many, and he made significant contributions to his field.

A devoted member of the community, Edward was an active parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption for 51 years. He found great joy in coaching Piedmont baseball and St. Mary’s CYO basketball, serving as a scorekeeper and statistician for Piedmont and Post 1 baseball teams, and sharing his love of sports with the youth in his community.

Edward’s passions extended beyond sports—he truly cherished time with his family. He met the love of his life, Jessica, at a Salesianum dance in 1960. It was love at first sight and the beginning of their 65-year journey together. He especially treasured the annual family beach trips to Belmar, NJ, and Fenwick Island, DE, where laughter and love flourished. A devoted father and grandfather, he took great joy in attending his children’s and grandchildren’s academic and sporting events, cheering them on with unwavering enthusiasm. Edward was also a dedicated Philadelphia sports fan and held a special affection for University of Delaware athletics.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, JoAnn Carello (William) and Roseann Dorazio (Anthony). Edward’s legacy lives on through his loving family, including his devoted wife of 59 years, Jessica Mary (Kwiatkowski) Szczerba; his daughter, Lisa Marie Hertsenberg (Dave); his sons, Edward W. Szczerba Jr. and Peter J. Szczerba (Jennifer); and his treasured grandchildren: Brittany Banks, Katie Szczerba, Alison Banks, Jack Szczerba, Peter ‘PJ’ Szczerba Jr., Carly Szczerba, Jessica (Hertsenberg) Dorman, and Brian Hertsenberg.

He is also survived by his siblings, Joseph Szczerba (Eileen), Francis Szczerba, Michael Szczerba (Martha Ann), and Mary Anne O’Neill; his brothers-in-law, William Carello and Anthony ‘Buddy’ Dorazio; and dozens of beloved nieces and nephews.
