Edward Thomas Mort, Sr.

December 4, 1928 ~ January 5, 2021 (age 92)

Edward T. Mort, Sr., 92, of Wilmington, passed away surrounded by his family on January 5, 2021.  He was born on December 4, 1928, to the late Fred and Anna Mort.  He graduated from Blacklick High School in Twin Rocks, Pennsylvania.   He met and married the love of his life, Mary Ann Cavanaugh on January 4, 1951.  Their 70th anniversary was the day before he passed.

They relocated to Wilmington, Delaware, where he began his career on the Wilmington Police Department and retired at the rank of Inspector.  He was well respected by his fellow officers.  During his police career, he always worked extra jobs to provide for his family.  He managed to obtain his Associates Degree from Delaware Technical & Community College and Bachelor's Degree from Wilmington College.   He went to Polygraph School and obtained his certificate from the Backster School of Lie Detection in New York.   He subsequently retired from the WPD and furthered his career with the City of Wilmington as the Director of Operations of the Fleet Management Department.   He also served on the Board of Directors for the Wilmington Police & Fire Federal Credit Union for many years.

Ed (also known as Big Ed to many) will be sadly missed by his wife; his daughters, Jeanie Troise (Nick), Carol Pulgini (Joe), Kathy Nagle (Tom), Trisha Phillips, and Maryann Mort (Bob Van Heek); and his grandchildren, Daniel Troise, Mary Ann Pulgini Dallatore (Anthony), Cristal Pulgini Murch (Sean), Edward T. Mort, III, (Lacey) and Tyler Phillips.  He is also survived by his great grandchildren, Donte & Sebastian Dallatore, Sawyer Murch, Dominik Troise, Cora Mort and Paisley Mort.

He was predeceased by his son, Edward T. Mort, Jr.; his grandsons, David Troise and T.J. Mort; and his son-in-law, Joe Pulgini.  He was the last of his siblings and was predeceased by his brothers, Fred, Steve, Eugene; and sisters, Evelyn, Ruth, Edith and Donna.

His beach house in Oak Orchard was his pride and joy and he loved taking his family out on the pontoon to fish, crab and clam on the Indian River Bay.  Many crab feasts were held on the back porch during the summer.   He was an avid hunter and looked forward to his yearly hunting trips to Pennsylvania with his son and good friends.  When he retired, he took over the kitchen.  He was always baking or making something; specializing in soups.  He loved gardening and grew the prettiest flowers, plants, and had the most successful vegetable gardens.

Dad enjoyed the holidays and always made them special.  He also enjoyed watching his children play various sports throughout the years.  He loved his grandchildren so much and always looked forward to seeing them, either playing games or giving them big hugs.   He loved his granddogs, Lexi, Benji, and Breeze and he always made sure he had treats for them.

Dad was a hard-working, loving, loyal and protective father.  He loved his family so much they meant everything to him.   Our dad was a warrior to the end and he will always be our champion.  We will forever miss him.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, services for Ed will be held privately.
