Dr. Herbert T. Casalena, DDS, 88, of Wilmington, Delaware peacefully passed away on Monday, March 30, 2026. Born in Wilmington on July 12, 1937, he was the youngest of seven children of the late Dominick and Frances (Episcopo) Casalena.
Dr. Casalena was a graduate of St. Thomas the Apostle Grade School and Salesianum High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Delaware and graduated from Temple Dental School in Philadelphia. Following his graduation from dental school, Dr. Casalena served in the United States Army for a period of two years.
Dr. Casalena practiced general dentistry in Wilmington for more than 50 years. He was a charter member and past-president of the Academy of General Dentistry, as well as a member of the President’s Council on Dental Health. He was also a lifetime member and past-president of the Delaware State Dental Society for Children, and was proud to have chaired the Delaware State Dental Society committee for the fluoridation of state’s drinking water.
Dr. Casalena was an active and faithful member of the Knights of Columbus for nearly 40 years and held a variety of elective and appointed positions, including Grand Knight of St. Pius X Council, Faithful Navigator of Bishop Thomas J. Mardaga Fourth Degree Assembly, and State Deputy of Delaware. He was also instrumental in the St. Pius X Council monthly dinners.
As a longtime member of St. Anthony of Padua Church, Dr. Casalena served on the parish council and took an active role in many parish projects and activities. He was a past recipient of the Benemerenti Medal in recognition of his service to the Diocese of Wilmington.
Dr. Casalena is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Evelyn (Piazza) Casalena and several nieces, nephews and their families.
He was predeceased by his six siblings and their respective spouses.
Per his request, the Mass of Christian Burial and interment for Dr. Casalena will be held privately.
