Dorothy C. (Kowalski) Szewczyk

Dorothy C. Szewczyk, age 93, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on Monday, September 19, 2022. Dorothy was a very strong and courageous person who loved her family more than anything in the world.

Dorothy was born on August 12, 1929 in Wilmington, DE to Constance E. (Markowski) and Michael Kowalski. She grew up in Hedgeville and was a lifetime member of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church. She married her loving husband, Marion Szewczyk in 1948 and went on to have two children, Patricia and Michelle. When her children were young, the phrase “stay-at home-mom” didn’t exist. It was usual for women to stay home with the children while their husbands worked. But even by the standards of the era, Dorothy was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help. Dorothy’s favorite pastime was spending time with her family. They were her most cherished treasures. Dorothy loved to play bingo; she enjoyed baking and was an excellent cook; Dorothy made the best homemade potato salad that she would proudly offer to bring to any family gathering.

Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Constance and Michael Kowalski; and her beloved husband, Marion Szewczyk.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Thomas Karpinski and Michelle and Andrew Sutherland. Dorothy was blessed with seven grandchildren, Allison, Jessica, Jennifer (Joe), Peter, Matthew (Emily), Ryan and Meghan; and six precious great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Spencer, Flynn, Izabella, Sutton, and Wolfe. Dorothy is also survived by her brother, Michael Kowalski; her two sisters, Caroline Grabauskas and Christine Skodzinski; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at St. Hedwig Church, 408 S. Harrison Street, Wilmington, DE 19805, where family and friends may visit beginning at 9:30am. Interment will be held in All Saints Cemetery.
