Donald Hallam Obituary

Donald E. Hallam, age 93, of Wilmington DE passed away peacefully an August 11, 2022.

Donald attended Wilmington High School and graduated from The University of Delaware with a degree in Engineering. He worked for and was later retired from the Du Pont company, where his career included development and installation of the equipment used in the Savannah River Project. This project produced basic materials to be used for our nation’s defense programs. Don made countless trips to DuPont installations domestically and throughout the world, providing trouble shooting and technical support for company projects.

Upon retirement Don established a business, Equipment Systems and Designs, Inc. which focused on computer engineering. He was instrumental in refurbishing the Mighty Kimball, a manual theater pipe organ on behalf of the Dickinson Theater Organ Society.

He enjoyed going out to breakfast and lunch with friends, some favorites included Crossroads Restaurant, Newport Diner, and Cosmos Restaurant. For 53 years he participated in a regular card game with dear friends.

Don was interested all things computer and tools.  He and his friend Van used to be early birds at computer sales, and would go to “Hamfests”, which are swap-shops for amateur radio enthusiasts.  He held a General Class amateur radio operator’s license; and developed an impressive collection of tools and equipment for the various pursuits he was involved in. Don also had a soft spot for stray cats, caring for a few at a time, either inside or outside.

He is survived by his nephew, Kenny Rutter, who provided him with companionship and assistance in his later years. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him dearly.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Betty, Nancy, and Barbara and his brothers Dale and Marshall.

The family wishes to express deepest thanks and gratitude to the staff of Christiana Care, Seasons/Accent Care Hospice, and all of the friends and family who have been part of Don’s life here on earth.
