Dona K. Hazzard, 77, passed away peacefully on July, 10 2021. She passed away with her most loved ones by her side. Dona was known as “mom” to her daughter, Wendi, but as "Mimi" to her two granddaughters, Alexandra and Gabriele Mitchell.
Dona was a self proclaimed "Navy Brat" and lived in Morocco, Alaska, California, Germany, France and Connecticut as this is how she developed her love for many cultures. Dona was a graduate of John Dickinson High School Class of 1962. She was recognized for her incredible cooking and pancake and muffin making with her granddaughters. She was passionate about animals, as she was a member of the Wilmington Kennel Club. She enjoyed showing off her Airedales in local dog shows and was a breeder of Airedales, Scotties and Westies.
Dona was an avid equestrian as well. One of her favorite pastimes included riding her horse alongside her husband, Peter, every day after work when they were first married. Dona met her husband of 40 years, Peter, while working at Blue Cross Blue Shield in Wilmington. Later in life, Dona raised goats, chickens and even a pony named Coco!
Dona had a busy professional life working at the Western YMCA, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and then opened her own store in Centreville, DE specializing in monogramming and fine gifts. She loved gardening, collecting jewelry, art, beanie babies and loved to decorate with an interest in interior design.
Dona is survived by her loving husband, Peter J. Hazzard; her daughter, Wendi; her siblings, Ronald, Donald, Joann and Janet; her granddaughters, Aly and Gaby; and her step-children, Robin, Peter Jr, and Laurie.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, July 19th, 2021 from 12:30-1:30pm at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. A memorial service will begin at 1:30pm. Interment will follow the memorial service at Cathedral Cemetery.
"God saw you getting tired, when a cure was not to be. So He wrapped his arms around you, and whispered, "Come to me". You didn't deserve what you went through, so He gave you rest. God's garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best. And when I saw you sleeping, so peaceful and free from pain I could not wish you back to suffer that again"
