David Vogel Obituary

David W. Vogel passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, after a long, courageous battle with diabetes. David was a proud man, especially when it came to his family’s accomplishments. One treasured part of his family legacy was Vogel’s Shoe Store, founded more than 120 years ago in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. David’s strong and unwavering faith in God was a guiding light throughout his life.

David attended The Ohio State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business and Finance, and later received his MBA from University of Arizona. He then moved to Delaware to begin his career. Shortly after relocating, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he worked as a business programmer. He was honorably discharged in May 1969.

Following his military service, David began his professional career with DuPont as an accountant and remained there until his retirement. After retiring from DuPont, he became a professor at University of Delaware, where he taught several business courses. He also worked as an expert consultant in the field of environmental accounting for prestigious companies including Nike and the Gauntlett Group.

In his younger years, David enjoyed traveling and spending time with family in Ohio. He was a dedicated season ticket holder for Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens football and especially looked forward to Saturdays spent watching his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes football. He loved long conversations about politics, current affairs, and sports. An avid reader with a lifelong passion for learning, David was also known for saving and sharing countless newspaper clippings with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Vogel II; his mother, Monica Fox Vogel; his brother, Thomas Vogel (Helen); and his sister, Jean Casey (Robert), all of Upper Sandusky, Ohio.

David is survived by his daughter, Julie O’Connor (Timothy), and his son, David Vogel II (Barbara); his grandchildren, Steven (Nikki), Dylan (Abbey), Megan, and Jack (Rory); his step-grandchildren, Kevin (Cambria) and Sarah (James) O’Connor; and seven great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Diane DiClemente, a beloved longtime friend whom he cherished immensely.

Though his family will miss him dearly, they find comfort in knowing he is no longer in pain. David will be remembered for his intelligence, curiosity, dedication to family, and lifelong love of learning.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, June 4, 2026, from 9:30–10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville, DE 19807. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be private.
