Charles Kienhofer Obituary

Charles Robert Kienhofer of Hockessin Delaware passed away on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022 and is missed dearly by his loving family.

Charles, affectionally known as Chuck, was born on October 23, 1934 in Cumberland, Maryland. Chuck carried the love of his hometown, located in the beautiful mountains of Western Maryland, as he moved to Baltimore, Boston, Cherry Hill and finally Hockessin, DE.  Chuck was a 1953 graduate of LaSalle High School, Cumberland, MD where he was selected to receive the esteemed Rapplair Award as the outstanding student athlete.  Chuck attended West Virginia University located in Morgantown, West Virginia and graduated in 1957.  Upon graduation, Chuck joined the United States Army, serving a combined six years in active and reserve duty.

Chuck began his professional career with RCA Information Systems as a Systems Manager.  He had a passion for the emerging information technology field and progressed in this career with Cigna Insurance Company as a Systems Engineer before being recruited by Core States National Bank to become Vice President of Central Systems Development.  Chuck and Barbara moved to Hockessin, Delaware in 1987 and Chuck retired from F. Schumacher & Company in December of 2003.

Chuck’s biggest love was for his wife Barbara. Chuck and Barbara were married for over 64 years and they were the proud parents of Andrea and Brian and their six grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Barbara Garlitz Kienhofer, his children Andrea Kienhofer Thomson, his son in law, Clay Thomson, son Brian Kienhofer and his daughter in law, Brigit Hanni Kienhofer, and grandchildren, Caroline Thomson Coleman, Jacqueline Thomson, Alexandra Thomson, Natalie Kienhofer and Shaun Kienhofer and grand-son in-law Mathew Coleman.

Chuck had a passion for the Western Maryland mountains, West Virginia Mountaineers, his Irish and German heritage, and enjoyed researching his family’s ancestry as well as traveling to Europe, Bermuda, Hawaii, Pleasanton, California and Kiawah, South Carolina.

A Memorial Mass Service will be held on Monday June 6, 2022 at the St Mary Assumption Church Hockessin, Delaware commencing at 1 PM.

The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the “Scottie’s Gift Foundation: www.scottiesgift.org”in honor of Chuck’s grandson, Scott Kienhofer, who passed away in 2018.
