Brian Timothy McDonald, 68, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 30, 1956, he was the beloved son of the late Lawrence J. and M. Mildred (Wilson) McDonald.
A graduate of Delcastle High School and Goldey–Beacom College, Brian was a man of determination, integrity, and kindness. In 1978, he and his father founded McDonald Safety Equipment from their family home—a venture that grew into a respected business under Brian’s leadership as President and Owner. With a natural gift for connecting with people, a deep well of knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to safety, Brian made a lasting impact on the industry.
For nearly four decades, Brian was an active and valued member of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Delaware, joining in 1986. He enthusiastically participated in countless events, especially the annual Trade Show for Contractors, and was a dedicated member of the Safety, Health & Wellness Committee. As a certified OSHA safety trainer, he shared his expertise with countless tradespeople, offering not only practical guidance but also camaraderie, humor, and genuine care.
Beyond his professional life, Brian’s heart was devoted to his family. He was a loving husband to his wife of 35 years, Susan (Guenveur) McDonald; a proud father to Philip McDonald, Timothy McDonald and his wife, Marra, and Patrick McDonald and his fiancée, Julie; and a doting “Pop-Pop” to his granddaughters, Giovannina and Tahlia. He also had a deep love for his dogs (or as he called them, the boys) Brian is also survived by his sisters, Judith McDonald and Denise Jones and her husband, Tom. He was preceded in death by his sister, Bernadette Krajewski.
Brian found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Taking his family and dogs out on the boat for sunset cruises and fishing trips, meandering through the Valley on long drives, and enjoying walks with “The Boys”. As a true Philadelphia sports fan, Brian proudly cheered on the Phillies and the Eagles and cursed them when they were doing poorly! Everywhere he went, his magnetic personality lit up the room. Brian had the rare gift of making everyone feel welcome, turning strangers into friends, and friends into family. Brian always arose early to start each day and had a steadfast belief that a handshake should always be given while standing, a small but telling sign of his respect for others. His warmth, humor, and generosity touched all who knew him, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless lives he impacted.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Monday, August 18 from 4:30 – 7:00PM.
