Obituary

Barbara M. Concord, 83, of Newark, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. Born in Wilmington on June 17, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Anna (Blunt) Stewart.

Formally trained in Cosmetology, Barbara worked as a stylist at John Wanamaker's in Wilmington. After marrying John and having children, her time was devoted to raising her three girls.  Once her children were school-aged, she worked as a teaching assistant at the Natalie B. Hammond Pre-school.

Barbara’s dedication to her daughters was unwavering, yet equally important was her role as a Christian and her commitment to service.   A longtime member of White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, Barbara dedicated countless hours to the church, including serving as Sunday School secretary, as a member on the Board of Deacons, and a regular attendee of the Women’s Bible Study group.  Barbara will also be remembered for her service in local and surrounding communities, working to end homelessness and hunger.   She was instrumental in the church’s food closet ministry and generously volunteered, for many years, at Hope Dining Room in Newark and Emmanuel Dining Room in Wilmington.   One of Barbara’s last service endeavors was her support of, and work with, Family Promise of Northern New Castle County, coordinating with communities to provide shelter to local families in need.

Barbara was an avid bowler.  Throughout the years, from her devout participation in bowling leagues at Pleasant Hill and Blue Hen Lanes emerged a stellar bowling average, but, more importantly, friendships that would prove to be lifelong.

Barbara will be dearly missed by her daughters, Karen Goff, Debra Concord and Julia Pardue (Shawn); her grandchildren, Chris Sloan (Celia), Kari Kroll (Nick), Sarah Hammond (Matt), Brynn Smith, Kara Pardue and Allysa Pardue; her great grandchildren, Jacob, Grayson, Braiden, Levi, Bekah, Olive and Elliott. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Carol Riggs; her brother, James Stewart (Jane); and many loving nieces and nephews.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, John Concord; her mother-in-law, Minnie Corsello; her sisters, Alice Pleasanton and Jean Palmatary (Don); her brothers, Charles Stewart (Nancy), Robert Stewart (Lois), Edward Stewart (Connie) and Howard Stewart (Shirley); her sons-in-law, Jim Smith and Gregory Goff

Family and friends are invited to the visitation at White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 15 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark on Saturday, September 9 from 9:30 – 10:45AM, with funeral services beginning at 11:00AM.
