Anthony Sigmund Tomczak, lovingly known by many as “Tony,” went to meet our merciful Lord on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on April 17, 1939, to Cecilia and Sigmund Tomczak of Wilmington, Tony spent his childhood in Richardson Park and later Glen Bernie.
In 1957, Tony met the love of his life, Joanne, at the Newark Hop. They married in 1961 and built a beautiful life together, raising their children in New Castle. After becoming empty nesters, they built their dream home in Bear and recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Tony was a proud member of Bricklayers & Craftworkers Local #1 for 63 years. A talented and dedicated craftsman, his work can be found on countless structures and notable buildings throughout Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., including projects at the University of Delaware and the Veterans Cemetery.
Outside of work, Tony cherished time spent outdoors, especially on the water. He loved fishing and proudly won a fishing tournament in Canada. He also enjoyed crabbing on the Chester River with his brother Ziggy. But on rainy days, you could often find him at Delaware Park enthusiastically cheering on the #2 horse. Tony also took great pride in growing tomatoes and was a devoted Phillies fan. Above all else, however, his greatest joy was his family. Nothing brought a brighter smile to his face than the presence of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Cecilia and Sigmund Tomczak; his brothers, Sigmund and John Tomczak; sister-in-law, Ada Tomczak; brother-in-law, Leon Gestwicki; and his beloved grandson, Troy Tomczak.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joanne (Thornton) Tomczak; his children, Roxanne Bergen (Robert) and Anthony F. Tomczak (Kelly); grandchildren, Paige Chapman (Tyler) and Brett Tomczak (Kalista); great-grandchildren, Chase Chapman, Cole Chapman, and Roman Tomczak, who is still being lovingly knit together by God in his mother’s womb; sister, Patricia Gestwicki; brother, Robert Tomczak (Lynne); and sister-in-law, Maureen Tomczak.
Those who knew Tony will remember his strength, determination, and deep love for life. After suffering a stroke nearly three decades ago, he continued to live life fully, with resilience, grace, and without complaint. He continued to travel, explore, and treasure time with family, serving as an inspiring example of perseverance and faith for all who knew him.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, 901 E. Newport Pike, Wilmington, DE 19804, beginning at 10:00 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.
