Anthony M. Paternoster (Tony), 76, of Middletown, Delaware was called to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. Born in Hazelton, Pennsylvania on December 5, 1948, he was the son of the late Anthony and Florence (Martin) Paternoster. Tony grew up a “military brat’ often moving to different bases with the Air Force including England, Germany, Alaska, Maine, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Texas, and Georgia. His parents eventually settled in Wilmington, DE (Sherwood Park) where he attended his senior year at John Dickinson High School (Class of ’67). Tony enlisted in the United States Army and served honorably in the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. There he received many decorations including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal for his bravery. He completed his service as a Sergeant in 1970 and used the G.I. Bill to earn a B.A. in Criminal Justice from the University of Delaware. He married his sweetheart Nancy Paulman in 1972 and was blessed to spend 34 years together before her passing in 2006. He was employed as a Loss Prevention Manager with Acme Markets, retiring after 25 years.
It was an honor to be invited to the annual ‘Bog Boys’ fishing / camping trip, a tradition Tony took pride in organizing for 40 years. He was a faithful member of Holy Family Parish and cherished his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed “blowing things up” every July 4th, UofD Football, listening to music and gardening. Tony made excellent “gravy” and meatballs that he’d share with his family. He will most be remembered by his selflessness and sacrifices he made for others.
Tony was predeceased by his wife, Nancy Paternoster; twin brother, John B. Paternoster and brother, Raymond Paternoster. Tony is survived by his children, Courtney Paternoster and husband, William “Bart” Hamill Jr., Justin Paternoster and wife, Olivia Hovatter; his grandchildren, Reoh and Bodi Hamill, Reese Paternoster; his sisters, Carole Gaughn and Kim Paternoster.
Family and friends are invited to visit at Holy Family Parish, E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark on Monday, February 10 from 10:00 – 11:00AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM. Interment will be held privately.
