Anne Marie C. Donovan, age 94, wife of the late William J. Donovan. Sr., passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2025. Anne Marie was born in Wilmington, DE on December 20, 1930 to the late Clement A. Carney, Sr. and the late Anne (Gillespie) Carney.
Anne Marie worked for a brief time with DuPont before she devoted all her time to raising a family. She married the love of her life, William J. Donovan, Sr., and was blessed with 2 daughters and 2 sons.
In her later years, Anne was a co-owner of the former Heritage Tag “Estate” Sales with her partner and good friend, Kay Collins. She was an avid volunteer with the Ministry of Caring, The Junior Board of St Francis Hospital and as a Lunch Mother at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic School.
Anne Marie was a longtime member of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church and a former member of the “old” DuPont County Club. Anne Marie cherished her time spent with family and friends at her Rehoboth Beach house and will be most remembered for her love and dedication to her family including her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was known as an excellent baker, especially her peanut butter fudge. She was very fashionable and always dressed to the nines.
She is survived by her children William J. “Bill” Donovan, Jr. of Wilmington, DE, Mary D. Blodgett (Rick) of Wilmington, DE and Michael C. Donovan (Ellie) of Wilmington, DE. Anne Marie is also survived by her grandchildren Matthew (Marcelle), Bryan (Kara), Mark (Amanda), Kelsey (Wes), Alison (Matt), Elizabeth, Will, Jake, Hannah and Chloe; great grandchildren Evelyn, Ryan, Ethan, Hazel, Fiona, Lidia, Hayden Elizabeth and Graham. Anne Marie is also survived by her sister Margaret “Peggy” Sharp of Wilmington, DE along with numerous other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
In addition to her late parents, Anne Marie was preceded in death by her daughter Anne M. Donovan; sisters Elizabeth “Betty” Taylor and Katherine “Kitty” Durnan and brother Clement A. “Buddy” Carney, Jr.
Family and friends are invited to visit St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 7 Sharpley Road, Wilmington, DE 19803 on Tuesday, April 29, 2025 from 10:00AM – 11:00AM with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00AM. Entombment will immediately follow Mass at Cathedral Cemetery.
