Anna Veronica (Pierce) Mays

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beautiful mother, Anna V. Mays, age 85, of Newark, DE. She passed away peacefully at home on Labor Day, 2023.

She was born in Wilmington, daughter of the late William and Marie (Devine) Pierce. Anna enjoyed a long career at Diamond State Telephone Company / Verizon after many years of service.

Anna knew the lyrics to every country song on the radio! She had a beautiful soprano voice that will be missed. She enjoyed taking scenic drives, dancing, and dining out with family and friends. She loved decorating around the holidays and above all else spending time with her family.

She is survived by her children, Glenn (Maggie), Kevin, and Holly (Joe Priday); her grandchildren, Marcy (Jerry), Brett, and Tyler (Fiancé, Aimee); her great-grandchildren, Emma and Kyle; her sisters, Rita White, and Marie Spain.

Anna is predeceased by her husband, Howard S. Mays, Jr. (1996) and two siblings, William and Patsy Pierce.

A viewing will be held at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808 on Tuesday, September 12, from 9:30am – 10:30am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, with interment to follow in All Saints Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Anna’s memory can be made to St. John the Beloved Church or to Delaware SPCA, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
