Alfred Joseph Dougherty, Sr., 92, passed away peacefully in the presence of his devoted wife, Nellie. The couple shared nearly seventy-one years of marriage, a testament to their enduring love and partnership.
Born in the Browntown section of Wilmington, Delaware, Al later made his home in Minquadale, where he often reminisced about his boyhood adventures hunting and trapping muskrats and snapping turtles in the nearby swamps.
He graduated from Salesianum High School and went on to attend Goldey-Beacom College before proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force. While stationed in Mississippi, Al met the love of his life, Nellie. The two were married shortly thereafter and began their lifelong journey together.
Al was later stationed at Dover Air Force Base, where he worked as an aircraft mechanic in the fuel systems shop as a civil service employee. He also served honorably as a Master Sergeant in the Air Force Reserve.
While raising his family, he volunteered as a firefighter with the Wilmington Manor Fire Company, Stations 28 and 32, and later served as a Delaware Fire Police officer for many years.
In their later years, Al and Nellie enjoyed traveling together to destinations such as Europe and Hawaii. They also shared a fondness for visiting local casinos, where they could often be found enjoying the slot machines. Above all, Al cherished spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him great joy and pride.
Al is survived by his beloved wife, Nellie, and his daughter, Theresa Black (Terry). He was predeceased by his son and daughter-in-law, Alfred and Ada Dougherty. He is also survived by four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A committal service will be held at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, Bear, DE on Wednesday, November 12th, 2025 at 11AM.
