Albert Patrick Shields, Sr., age 89, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 23, 2025.
He was born in Wilmington, DE, one of seventeen children of the late William and Ethel (Toscik) Shields. Al was a graduate of Salesianum and enjoyed a 68-year career as an electrician with the IBEW Local 313, retiring in 1998.
Al was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following his favorite teams - Notre Dame, the Phillies, and the San Francisco 49ers. Above all else, he cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy (Sisofo) Shields; his children, Susan Maddox (Michael), Sandy Duchemin, Albert, Jr., Joseph (Lisa), Thomas (Stephanie), and Mandy Feliciano (Santos); his 19 grandchildren; and 2 sisters, Cecilia Creedon, and Patricia Smith.
In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his brothers, Fr. Charles Shields, John Shields, Andrew Shields, Gerald Shields, Joe Shields, and Henry Shields; and his sisters, Ethel Starr, and Mary Diggins.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 5:00 - 7:00pm on Monday, December 1, 2025 at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 502 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
