In memoriam of Vernon Charles Smith, who passed away on December 21, 2017.
Born in Somerville, MA, Vernon met the love of his life and future wife of 53 years, Judy, at the YMCA in Braintree, MA, as teenagers. From there, they began their journey together as devoted parents and grandparents.
Vernon graduated from Braintree H.S. in MA. He then attended North Eastern University where he earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering. Vernon served as an Army Captain in the Vietnam War.
Vernon had worked at Hercules Research Center for over 30 years. He loved to learn and enjoyed taking classes at the Osher Lifelong Learning Center, where he also volunteered at the library.
Vernon found great pleasure in fishing, which he loved to teach to his grandchildren. He was also an avid rock collector and volunteered with the St. Mark’s Geology Team and brought samples to schools to share with children.
Vernon was the son of the late Charles Melborne and Ethel Pearl (Scobey) Smith, who were from Nova Scotia. He is survived by his siblings, Sherman Smith, Sterling Smith and Lillas Boudreau; as well as his children and grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, December 29, 2017 at St. Mary's of the Assumption Church in Hockessin, DE. Interment will be held on Monday, January 7, 2019 at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Ashland.
