Mary M. (Kavanaugh) Szymanski, 84, of Elkton, Maryland, formerly of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away on Thursday, August 23, 2018.
Mary was born in Wilmington on April 19, 1934, daughter of the late John and Anna (Bradley) Kavanaugh. A graduate of St. Elizabeth High School, class of 1952, and Goldey Beacom College, she began her working career at Atlas Powder Company until leaving to establish and raise her family, which grew to nine children. Mary later reentered the workforce at Brandywine Dialysis and Riverside Extended Care Pavilion.
For the last 16 years, Mary resided in Cecil County, Maryland. She was a gracious host and her home was always open to one and all. She especially enjoyed long standing weekly gatherings with her St. Elizabeth classmates. Deeply devoted to her family, Mary was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Mary is survived by her children, Annmarie Heisler, James (Gael), John (Christine), Kevin (Mary), Karen Szymanski, Timothy (Marci), Christopher (Magdalena), and Matthew (Trish); her brother, Rev. John Kavanaugh; 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her son, Joseph.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Thursday, August 30 from 5:00-7:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington on Friday, August 31 at 2:00PM. Interment will be held privately at a later date in Cathedral Cemetery.
