Jane F. (Hackendorn) McComas

June 8, 1935 ~ October 6, 2017 (age 82) 82 Years Old


The Irish in heaven are rejoicing now that one of their own has joined them today, October 6, 2017.

Jane, affectionately known to her family as Jenny-Ren was the first born of 9 children to Francis (Conge) and Marie Hackendorn on June 8, 1935.

Jane grew up on the west side of Wilmington known as the Woodlawn Flats and attended St. Thomas School and Wilmington High School. After high school she got married and became a mother to 6 children who survive her, Jane West (Don), Helen Berglund (David), Robin Kahn, Mary Spencer (Jeff), Anna Wheeler (Larry), and son Robert McComas. She is also survived by her siblings Helene Clough, Clare Johnson, Pat Hackendorn, Barbara Yeatman, Sue Frie and Lisa Hunt as well as her 15 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

She was predeceased in death by two of her brothers Michael and John and her daughter-in-law Jane Thorpe McComas.

Jane was very active throughout her life in various clubs in Wilmington, especially the Irish Culture Club, The Stapler Club, West End Rod and Gun Club, the Wilmington Women’s Shuffleboard League, and served on the committee of the DAP Pushmobile Derby.

In 1975 Jane went to work for the City of Wilmington Police Department, Traffic Division. There she served as a meter maid for many years until she became supervisor of all the meter maids and crossing guards. She retired from there after 25 years with many fine memories and many, many friends.

Jenny-Ren never met a stranger and was loved by all. She will always be fondly remembered for her Love of Family, Love for all things Irish and hugs and kisses. 

Her spirit lives on.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 11 from 5-7 pm at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 12 at 10 am in Holy Family Church, 15 Gender Rd., Newark. Burial will be private.

In memory of Jane, the family suggests contributions to the Sunday Breakfast Mission, 110 N. Poplar St., Wilmington, DE 19801 in lieu of flowers.
