Gerald F. Lucht of Newark passed away at home on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at the age of 80. The son of the late Edward and Stella Lucht, he was born and raised in Middlefield, OH. He graduated from Middlefield High School and went on to graduate in chemical engineering at Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve University) in Cleveland.
Before his senior year at college, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Jean Buber. After graduation, they moved to Buffalo, NY where he began his 39-year career at DuPont working in the areas of production, engineering and human resources. In 1972, Gerry and his family relocated to Newark, DE as he continued his career with DuPont.
Gerry was a 46-year member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, which he served in numerous leadership capacities through the years including the chair of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee and Co-chair of Stewardship Committee. He was on the Board of Trustees and treasurer of the Cemetery Association. Gerry founded the Welcoming Committee. He had a large heart for outreach to the surrounding communities. Gerry served meals at the Hope Dining Room and was even known to cook macaroni casseroles if needed. He loved music and was the member of the bell choir for several years. Gerry was motivated by a “purpose driven life” and served in positions to help others find God’s purpose. He and Barbara were both passionate square dancers in the 2x4s Square Dance Club for over 20 years, helping to teach square dancing and its benefits to many others. Gerry was an avid tennis player and loved to garden.
Above all, it was Gerry’s devotion and support to his family and friends that always stood out. He was always willing to serve. Never did he turn down a request to do a home project, to help a loved-one in need, or even to give someone a ride. He loved to attend events involving his grandchildren and would often be seen with his camera around his neck as he captured the memories.
In addition to his wife of 59 years, Gerry is survived by his children: Jeffrey (Lynn) of Avondale and Pamela McGregor (David) of Reston, VA; grandchildren: Lauren McGregor, Michael Lucht, Amy Auker (Cameron), Kristin Benoit (Michael), and Andrew McGregor (Rachel); great-grandchildren: Levi and Hannah Auker, and Harrison Benoit. He is also survived by a brother Terrence (Joyce) of Springboro, OH.
A funeral service will be held at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 525 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark, DE 19711 on Friday, September 7, 2018 at 11:00AM. Visitation will begin at 9:30AM in the church sanctuary. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. Lunch will follow the service in Fellowship Hall.
