Frederick J Best

Frederick J. Best, age 71, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 29, 2019 at his residence with his loving wife, Kathleen, by his side.

The son of the late Frederick E. and Jane M. (Toomey) Best, Fred was born in Wilmington, DE in 1948. Fred attended Salesianum High school, Class of 1966 and went on to become a lab technician. Fred was employed by the DuPont Company and spent a total of 46 years working at the Experimental Station. He was also the fifth generation in his family to be employed by DuPont.

Fred spent a great deal of time volunteering and dedicated 25 years volunteering for the Ministry of Caring. He was also involved with the Boy Scouts of America. In his leisure time, Fred enjoyed swimming at the Fraim Senior Center and loved learning about anything and everything at the College of Lifelong Learning.

Fred is survived by his wife, Kathleen Ward-Best, of 32 years. He is also survived by his siblings, Karen (Jim) Wadsworth, Timothy (Beth) Best, Jane (Dan) Weick, Kevin (Nancy) Best, Geri (Charles) Donahue, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. Fred was predeceased by his sister, Christine M. Best.

Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Saturday, January 4, 2020 from 10am-1pm at Doherty Funeral Home, 1900 Delaware Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19806. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Fred’s name may be made to the Ministry of Caring, Inc., 115 East 14th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801-3209.
