Martha Gilbert Obituary

Martha J. Gilbert, 82, of Hockessin, Delaware passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 20, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.

Martha was born in Buffalo, New York to Leighton and Margaret (Snow) Jackson. She was a direct descendent of William Bradford, the governor of Plymouth who arrived on the Mayflower. Martha graduated from Newark High School in 1959. She attended the University of Delaware where she earned a BS and a MA in Education. It was at the University of Delaware that Martha met her husband, Richard (Dick). After marrying, Martha and Dick moved to North Wilmington where they raised their family and made many lifelong friends.

In 1963, Martha began her teaching career in the Alfred I. DuPont School District. When she returned to teaching after having her children, Martha taught in the Brandywine and Colonial School Districts. After her retirement, Martha became a Child Life Volunteer at the Nemours Children's Hospital. Martha enjoyed traveling with her husband and their friends. She especially loved the yearly trip she and Dick would take to St. Maarten every August where she loved to snorkel. An avid bridge player, Martha played in various groups for over sixty years. Martha also enjoyed playing tennis, crossword puzzles, reading, watching sports, and getting together with her friend groups. A devoted mother and grandmother, Martha attended many sporting events, graduations, and celebrations throughout her lifetime.

Martha was predeceased by her husband, Richard W. Gilbert, and a nephew. She is survived by her son, Richard Gilbert; daughter, Elizabeth Barry (Jack); her granddaughters, Caitlin Barry and Samantha Barry; her sister, Barbara Higgins; as well as her nieces and a nephew.

The family would like to thank the nurses, aides, and support staff at Willow Brook Court, Cokesbury Village for the wonderful care they showed Martha over the last six months. The family would also like to acknowledge the Accent Care Hospice Team at Christiana Hospital for their support of Martha as she made her way home.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life service for Martha on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 2 pm. The service will take place in the Auditorium at Cokesbury Village, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, Delaware, 19707. Interment will be private.

Martha twice survived cancer but lost her husband and mother to the disease so in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or your favorite animal rescue. Martha was a kind and generous person who often did things for others without the need for recognition. To honor her life and legacy, please consider doing a random act of kindness.
