Welcome to the memorial page for

Ruth Elizabeth Lichtenberger Griffin

April 9, 1929 ~ May 14, 2015 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Our loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Ruth Elizabeth (Lichtenberger) Griffin, was called to her eternal rest and her new life on May 14, 2015 in Wilmington, Delaware. She was born to Charles C. and Ruth R. (Houngstine) Lichtenberger in Ridgewood, Queens, New York, on April 9, 1929. Ruth grew up during the Great Depression and always credited her parents for raising her as the kind, honest, and accepting person she was. She graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in 1947, and worked as a secretary at an insurance brokerage in Manhattan until her wedding to Robert H. (Bob) Griffin in June 1950. Ruth and Bob met on a blind date, were married for 45 years, and lived most of their married life in Massapequa Park, Long Island, NY, where they raised their three children in a warm and loving home. Beginning in the 1970s and ending in 1993 Ruth worked as a sales associate for JC Penney.
A woman of deep and abiding faith, Ruth was a longtime and active member of St. David's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Massapequa Park. After retirement in 1993, Ruth and Bob moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where she became an active member of Limestone Presbyterian Church.
She set an example for her family of a life lived with gratitude and generosity. Ruth was also always proud of her family, and put them first. She is survived by her daughter Donna (David) Shumaker, Bethesda, MD, her son Steven (Andrea) Griffin, Santa Clarita, CA, and her son Christopher (Peachy) Griffin, Newark, DE. She is also survived by granddaughters Kristin Shumaker, Nicole (Mitch) Skrove, Amanda (Carl) Amerine, Casey (Zachary) Taylor, and grandsons Tanner Griffin, and James Griffin, and by five great-grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bob, her beloved older brothers Charles (Chuck) Lichtenberger and Ellsworth (Ells) Lichtenberger, and by Lee Davis, Jr., of Delaware, her fiance and companion of 10 years. Ruth had many close and lasting friendships throughout her life, with dear friends and family far and wide. These relationships she treasured. She will be remembered by all whose lives she blessed.
The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the staff at Arden Courts and Heartland Hospice for the wonderful care they provided.
A Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at 11AM, at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, Rev. Bruce Gillette officiating. Interment will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Ruth's memory to either Limestone Presbyterian Church, with the designation "in memory of Ruth Griffin," 3201 Limestone Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808, or the Alzheimer's Association, at www.alz.org.
