Roland M. Todd, age 92, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 29, 2018 with his loving family by his side.
Born and raised in Middletown, DE, Roland was the son of the late Elbert and Myrtle (Denning) Todd. He graduated from Middletown High School and had attended Brown Vocational School. Roland began his career as a sheet metal worker working his way to become a supervisor at several small local firms. Before retiring, he was an HVAC Engineer, designing HVAC units at a local firm for many years. For 29 years, Roland and his wife, Joanne, were active members of Berea Presbyterian Church.
Roland was an amazing craftsman in anything, especially woodworking, metal latheing, and blacksmithing. His greatest accomplishment was building his home in Hockessin together with his wife from the ground up. Roland was also mechanically inclined with machinery and enjoyed working on his antique John Deere tractors. He had an amazing work ethic and felt you were capable of accomplishing anything in life you put your mind to.
Roland was a good Christian family man, who was very proud of his three sons. He will be remembered for his great storytelling, especially of stories from his youth, as well as his great sense of humor. He treasured many family camping trips and their annual beach vacations to Fenwick Island. Through the years, he also enjoyed fishing and sailing on his sailboat with his family.
Roland is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Joanne D. (Downing) Todd; his sons, Mark D. Todd, Jed D. Todd (Claudia) and Michael M. Todd (Lee Blessing); his six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; as well as his special niece, Roberta Ahmed, who had a close bond with Roland and Joanne. He was predeceased by his parents, as well as his sisters, Dorothy Voshell and Ruth Steel.
Family and friends may visit on Thursday, April 5 from 10 to 11 AM at Gracelawn Memorial Park Chapel, 2220 N. Dupont Highway, New Castle, DE 19720, where a Celebration of Roland’s Life will begin at 11 AM. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, 3152 Little Rd., Suite 146, Trinity, FL 34655.
