Welcome to the memorial page for

Robert "Bob" F. Herman

November 30, 1924 ~ September 17, 2017 (age 92) 92 Years Old

Robert F. Herman, age 92, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 17, 2017 with his loving family by his side.

Born and raised in Wilmington, Bob was the son of the late Robert L. and Pauline F. (Colton) Herman. Bob was a U.S. Army Air Corp Veteran, where he served as a Corporal stationed near London during World War II. After his service, he worked for the Pennsylvania railroad. For over 30 years, Bob was a millwright for DuPont at the Chestnut Run Facility before retiring in 1985. He was longtime member of St. Matthew Church, where he volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was active with RCIA.

Bob was an amazing softball player. While in the Army Air Corp, he was presented with a Certificate of Merit for pitching his team to a second place finish in the All England Tournament. Bob was one of the finest fast pitch pitchers in Delaware during the 1940’s, 1950’s and 1960’s while playing for Frankies and several DuPont teams. He was best known in earlier years as “The Powerhouse of Frankies”. In 2015, Bob was inducted into Delaware Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame.

In his spare time, Bob and his wife enjoyed traveling all over and taking cruises, as well as attending theater and concert events. He was an avid Phillies fan and always traveled down to Florida for spring training. Bob was quite the handyman and could always be found working on projects or fixing things around the house.

Bob will be remembered for his very generous and giving heart. He always had a strong sense of what was important and instilled that in his family. Aside from his family, Bob was dearly loved by his many close friends.

Bob is survived by his wife of 26 years, Anne (Farra) Lemon Herman; his children, Paul F. Herman (Karen) of Richmond, VA, Robert L. Herman (Lori) of Athens, GA; his step children, Maryann L. Reece (Robert), Michael F. Lemon (Kim), and Francis Q. Lemon, III (Maryanne) all of Wilmington; his grandchildren, Leslie, Elliott, Christopher, Mary, Robert, Brian, Beth, Miranda, Karen, Sarah, Kristin and Justin; his sister in law, Kathryn I. Strosnider; as well as his beloved granddoggies, Peanut and Abby. He was also survived by many friends, including Deacon Harold and Janet Chalfont. Bob was predeceased by his wife, Edna (Schendelman) Herman.
