Peter L. Phipps, known by all as “Peat”, age 60, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 22, 2018.
Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Peat was the son of the late Edgar and Joan (Wicks) Phipps. Throughout his life, he was a self-employed as a landscaper. Until recently, Peat was the groundskeeper at Dickinson High School, where he had worked for the past eight and a half years.
In his leisure time, Peat enjoyed riding his Harley and going to Ocean City Bike Week every year. He could always be found hanging out with his large circle of friends. Peat loved to go to Dover Downs to watch the Nascar races. He was also an outdoorsy guy, who loved bird watching and nature.
Peat will be remembered for enjoying life. He had a great sense of humor and was always there for his family and friends. Peat was a devoted “Popp” to his “Weee Girls”, his special nickname for his granddaughters for their love of swinging on the rope swing he put up for them.
Peat is survived by his daughter, Katie Devlin and her husband, Christopher; his granddaughters, Mia and Keira; his loving companion for over 20 years, Antoinette “Toni” Setting-Summa; his brothers, Paul and Philip Phipps; his sister, Elizabeth Phipps; his nephew, Parker Phipps; and his niece, Julia Phipps. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Patrick Phipps; his sister in law, Deborah Phipps; as well as his beloved dog, Frank.
Family and friends may visit from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday, March 8 at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808, where a Celebration of Peat’s Life will begin at 7 PM. Interment will be private.
