Welcome to the memorial page for

Nicholas James Sterling

December 17, 1965 ~ October 18, 2016 (age 50) 50 Years Old

Nicholas James Sterling, age 50 of New Castle, passed away on Tuesday, October 18th, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Born on December 17, 1965 in Providence, Rhode Island, his family later moved to the Wilmington area where Nick attended Thomas McKean High School. Several years later he met his beloved wife, Amy. He immediately knew he would marry her and spend his life with her.

For many years, Nick worked at the Port of Wilmington, where he was a member of Teamsters Local 326. Nick’s passion for cars and racing led him to a career in auto repair at Midway Muffler shop. Nick never met a car he couldn’t fix. He spent many weekends at Cecil County Drag Way and attended NASCAR races in Talladega, Richmond, Daytona and Dover. On a cool sunny day Nick enjoyed cruising in his first car, a 1966 Chevy Impala convertible, jamming to Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers.

Nick could boast a huge circle of friends, all of whom knew him for his generosity and willingness to help. Besides being a huge NASCAR fan and avid Philadelphia sports fan, Nick had a passion for youth baseball, and put his heart and soul into coaching his son and mentoring young players in the New Castle Little League from 2000-2008.

Nick is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 26 years, Amy Horty Sterling, his son Christopher James, and two daughters Alyssa Ellen and Hannah Nicole.

He is also survived by his mother, Sheila Sterling of Wilmington, his father Marvin Sterling and wife, Pat also of Wilmington, brothers Henry and Michael Sterling both of Florida, sister Kimberly Loutsenhizer of Virginia and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, all of whom will always remember Nick’s huge heart and love for his family.

The family would like to acknowledge Dr. Pamela Simpson and Compassionate Care Hospice for their care and support during Nick’s most difficult times.

Visitation for family and friends will be on Saturday, October 22nd from 8:30 to 10 AM at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 22nd at 10:30 AM at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Rd., Wilmington, DE. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery.
