Nancy E. (Venters) Mitchell

Nancy E. Mitchell, age 89, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2016. Born in Wilson, NC, she was the daughter of the late Golden Thomas and Ethel Priscilla Venters.

Nancy was always one to get involved and volunteer her time to any person or organization that needed her help. In the early 1950’s, she started the PTA in her school district in New York City. Before retiring, Nancy had worked in activities at Little Sisters of the Poor in Queens, NY, for 17 years. After retiring, she moved back to Wilson, NC, where she volunteered her time with many organizations such as Meals on Wheels and the Wilson Crisis Center. Nancy was a member of the Board of Directors for Barton College, a docent at the Wilson Arts Council and a member of the Ombudsman Committee for Nursing Homes.

In her spare time, she was an avid reader and loved to travel all over the United States and abroad. Nancy loved dancing and enjoyed listening to diverse music, but especially loved smooth jazz, classical, R & B, and Salsa. She also loved Broadway shows, fine dining and museums in New York City.

Nancy will be remembered for her very social and friendly personality. She was always very warm, engaging and respectful to anyone she met. Nancy was a loving devoted mother, grandmother and friend.

Nancy is survived by her sons, Norman, Richard and Mark (Sharell); her 3 daughters, Karen, Sylvia (Eric), and Marianne (A.J.); her 6 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; as well as her nephew, Golden Thomas and his family. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Thomas.

Services will be held privately.
