Mary Lou Standarowski “Tootsie”, 70, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family on Monday April 10, 2018, following a protracted battle with metastatic breast cancer, a battle she handled with courage and grace.
Mary Lou was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, godmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her extended family, with the exception of playing cards with her family and of course, winning.
She was a woman full of love, and even more so of laughter – a combination that filled every room she entered. A life-long tennis player and avid gardener, Mary Lou loved to spend time working around the yard, mulching, bird watching, transplanting flowers, and scaring away deer from eating her daffodils. Her passing leaves this earth colder and still, and the heavens brighter and more boisterous. Mary Lou retired from the Christina School District after 37 years of faithful service where she made lasting friendships and fond memories.
Mary Lou is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years; Robert Standarowski (Bob); two sons Robert Standarowski II (Rob) wife Katie of Newark DE, Derek Standarowski of Washington D.C.; two grandchildren, Robert Standarowski III (Bobby), James Standarowski; Siblings, Margaret “Mucky” Salzburn and Joseph Reinert of St. Cloud Minnesota.
She is preceded in death by her parents Norbert Reinert and Gertrude Streitz; brothers, Ralph, John “Jack”, Nicholas; and sisters, Barbara, Rosemary, and Elizabeth.
Friends and Family are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Thursday, April 19 from 5-7 PM. A Mass and celebration of Mary Lou’s beautiful life will be held at St. John the Baptist Church, 200 East Main St. Newark, DE on Friday, April 20 at 9:30 AM. Burial services will be held immediately following mass at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd. Bear, DE 19701.
In lieu of flowers, family and friends are encouraged to donate to METAvivor, an organization dedicated to the specific fight of women and men living with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, METAvivor.org.
