Mary Kathryn (Marshall) Keating

Mary Kathryn (Marshall) Keating, 56, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2016 after a prolonged and courageous battle with Type 1 Diabetes. She was surrounded by her loving family and dear friends.

Mary K, as she was commonly referred to, was born in Honolulu, HI, daughter of the late William A, Sr. and Rita (Wierzbowski) Marshall. Upon her father’s retirement from the U.S. Army in the late 1960’s, he moved their family to Delaware. Mary K is a 1983 graduate of the University of Delaware, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She went on to enjoy a 9-year teaching career at St. John the Beloved School.

Mary K is survived by her husband, Kevin; her daughter, Meghan; her son, Brendan; and her brother, William, Jr. She and Kevin went to high school together and ended up re-connecting at their 10-year reunion and were later married on April 21, 1990. She briefly retired from her aforementioned teaching career when her children were born, but as they grew older, she began teaching at the Limestone Hills Day School, from 2005 – 2009.

Mary K loved taking family trips to Lewes Beach and loved to cook for family and friends. She was an avid Philadelphia sports fan, especially the Flyers, and enjoyed listening to sports talk radio. She absolutely adored children and especially cherished the time she spent with her family.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 5:00pm – 7:00pm on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Church, Cedar and Clayton Streets, Wilmington, DE 19805. Interment will be held privately with her family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mary K can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 100 W. 10th Street, #1103, Wilmington, DE 19801, or to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1893, Memphis, TN 38101-9950.
