Lawrence J. O’Toole Sr., age 85, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Son of the late John J. and Madelyn W. O’Toole, “Larry” was also preceded in death by his sister, Rhita and brother, John.

Larry was a standout “triple threat” athlete at Wilmington High School, excelling at basketball, baseball and football. He attended the University of Delaware on a football scholarship and also played baseball. He was especially proud to be a member of the university’s 1946 Cigar Bowl National Championship football team. After two years of service in the United States Army, he completed a degree in education at the West Chester State Teachers’ College.

Following his education, he began what would become a 33-year teaching career at Bohemia Manor High School in nearby Maryland.  At “Bo Manor,” Larry enjoyed his many years as a Biology teacher and was proud to inspire numerous students on to careers in the sciences. He also shared his love of sports as an assistant football and baseball coach for many seasons.  Larry retired in 1994.

In his own words, his greatest achievement was his family. He is survived by his wife Julie (Rubini), and six children: Larry O’Toole, Jr., Maureen Murphy, Loraine O’Toole, David O’Toole, Diane Ruth and Darren O’Toole. Two highlights of his later years were his grandchildren, Christian Ruth and Daniel Murphy.  Larry is also survived by his sister-in-law, Lena O’Toole, as well as several nieces and nephews.

His family is grateful to the staffs of Christiana Care Hospital, ManorCare Health Services Pike Creek, and Heartland Hospice for all their care and compassion.

A viewing will be held on Monday, February 2 from 10:00-11:30AM at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, Wilmington, DE 19808.
