John Edward Sullivan, known to all as “Jack”, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, April 12, 2018. Jack was born on August 9, 1938 in Tamaqua, PA to Charles and Marie Sullivan. Jack attended Marian Catholic High School and proudly enlisted and served in the U. S. Army as a radio signalman in Alaska. After his honorable discharge, Jack graduated with a degree in accounting from Goldey Beacom College. After graduating, he married Mary Moyer of Coaldale, PA. Jack and Mary moved to Delaware and after an initial stint with the DuPont Company Jack began in the insurance business with the Travelers. He cofounded Poland & Sullivan Insurance in 1970. He spent the better part of the next three decades growing his business until his retirement in 2003. Jack was an incredibly devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Sullivan and Catherine O’Donnell, and his brother Charles Sullivan. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary; sons John (Linda), Andy (Amy), and daughter Mary (Joe). He is also survived by his beautiful grandchildren Shannon, Ryan (Melissa), Cody, Sean, Allie (Tyler), Danielle, Kathleen, Matthew, Jennifer, Brendan, and Jack as well as his sisters-in-law Catherine Price, Claire Vilcheck, and Carol Sullivan and brothers-in-law Daniel Moyer (Mary Ellen), and Thomas Moyer (Evelyn) and many nieces and nephews.
Family was of the utmost importance to Jack. The family will greet friends from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Monday, April 16 at the Doherty Funeral Home at 3200 Limestone Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808 and will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 PM at St. Mary of the Assumption Church at 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery.
