John E. Smith, Jr., 66, of Wilmington, DE, peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, April 22, 2015.

John was born in Hazelton, PA on May 19, 1948, son of the late John E., Sr. and Nancy (Walsh) Smith.  He proudly served our country as a member of the US Army in the 335th Assault Helicopter Company during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the National Guard and attended Goldey Beacom College. John loved studying history, following politics, and watching baseball.  He had a warm and witty sense of humor.

John is survived by his wife of 42 years, Maria (Peterson) Smith; his daughters, Jennifer Ciccaglione (Michael) and Laura Corridori (Chris Grenier) and six beloved grandchildren, Juliana, Anthony, Gabriella, Samantha, Allison and Noah.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Michael and Robert.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Tuesday, April 28 from 9:00-10:30AM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 4th Street and Bancroft Parkway, Wilmington at 11:30AM.  Interment will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John may be made to the American Lung Association, 630 Churchmans Road, Suite 202, Newark, DE 19702 (www.lung.org).
