Joanne (Macklin) Smith, age 83, of Wilmington, DE passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 following a long battle with rheumatoid arthritis.
Joanne was born on September 3, 1932, daughter of the late John A. and Marguerite (Wilson) Macklin. A graduate of Wilmington High School, class of 1950, she was employed as a secretary with the State Board of Education and the Red Clay Consolidated School District and retired after 20 years of service. She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.
Joanne and her husband, Donald K. Smith, were married in 1957. They enjoyed many road trips throughout the United States as they attended Korean War Veterans reunions. An avid University of Delaware Blue Hens football fan, she also enjoyed attending home games and traveling with Don to games in many parts of the country. Joanne was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother.
Joanne is survived by her husband of nearly 59 years, Don; her daughter, Donna Bell (husband, John); and her brother, John Macklin (wife, Janie). Her favorite times were spent with her family, most especially her grandson, Christopher, who was the apple of her eye.
Friends are invited to visit at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 1700 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19804 on Thursday, June 30 from 10:00-11:00AM. Funeral services, officiated by Rev. Thomas Edwards, will immediately follow the visitation.
Committal services will be held in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear on Friday, July 1 at 10:00AM.
