Francis E. Menton, 82 of Wilmington peacefully passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017.

Fran was born in Wilmington on December 28, 1934, son of the late Richard and Gertrude Menton.  A graduate of Wilmington High School, he proudly served our country in the United States Army, having been stationed in Germany.  Following his military service, Fran became a dedicated, 52 year employee of the City of Wilmington and retired as a Water Production Supervisor in 2012.

Fran enjoyed playing horse shoes and was a skilled bowler, having achieved several perfect scores.

A man of few words, Fran was gentle, selfless, caring and devoted. He genuinely enjoyed making others happy; often helping in times of need, great or small, never looking for anything in return. His grandsons were his greatest joy, bringing light and laughter to his life.

Franny is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Carmelita (Funaro) Menton; his daughter, Bonnie Dudley and husband, Brandon; his beloved grandsons, Graham and Colin. He will also be dearly missed by many nieces, nephews and friends who became his family over the years.

Francis was predeceased by his brothers, Richard, Dennis and Joseph; his sisters, Gertrude, Marie and Elizabeth.

Fran’s family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude for the unparalleled care given to him by the many medical aids, nurses, and doctors who have become a part of their family over the past 6 years, and the Compassionate Care Hospice team of St. Francis Hospital.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 1900 Delaware Avenue, Wilmington on Tuesday, May 23 from 5:00-7:00PM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann Church in Wilmington on Wednesday, May 24 at 10:00AM.  Entombment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Franny may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org) or AMVETS (www.amvets.org).
