Dallas Green

August 4, 1934 ~ March 22, 2017 (age 82) 82 Years Old


G. Dallas Green, 82, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2017 with family at his side. He was born on August 4, 1934 in Wilmington, DE, to George and Mayannah Green.

Dallas graduated from Conrad High School in 1952. He then attended the University of Delaware where he played baseball and basketball. He earned the Medal of Distinction at UD in 1992, was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the UD Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998.

Dallas married Sylvia Lowe Taylor in 1958 in Wilmington, DE. They were happily married and lived an interesting and adventuresome life together for 59 years.

Dallas’s love of the game was evident with an illustrious 62-year career in baseball. Early in his career after managing Phillies minor league teams, Dallas moved to the front office of the Phillies and served as Farm Director and Scouting Director overseeing the minor league department.  He was the manager of the first Philadelphia Phillies team to win the World Series in 1980. He became the General Manager of the Chicago Cubs from 1982 to 1988, where he was instrumental in the development of the Cubs farm system and named Baseball Executive of the Year while in Chicago. He managed both the New York Yankees in 1989 and the Mets in 1993 to 1996 before returning to the Phillies, where most recently was the Advisor to the General Manager. He was honored on the Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Fame.

He enjoyed hunting in earlier years and working at his Stone Lea Farm later in life.  

Dallas is survived by his wife, Sylvia; his children, Dana (Mark) Ressler of Conowingo, MD, John (Roxanna) Green, Tucson, AZ, Kim Green of Oakland, CA, and Doug (Elin) Green of West Grove, PA; his sister, Carol Jones (Gil Jones) of Plant City, Florida; his grandchildren, Holly Ressler, Hunter Ressler, Dallas Jordan Green, Benjamin Green, and Finn Green; and his nieces and nephews, Pam Jones, Danielle Repass, Charlie Jones, Troy Jones, Steve Webb, Michael Webb, and other members of his extended family.

Dallas was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Thelma Webb; his nephew, Jamie Webb, both of Newport, DE; and granddaughter, Christina Taylor Green of Tucson, AZ.

A memorial service will be held at The Chase Center on the Riverfront, 815 Justison Street, Wilmington, DE 19801 on Saturday, April 1st 2017 at 11:00am.
