Charles Kromer Messick

Charles Kromer Messick, 90 of Wilmington, DE passed away Monday, April 2, 2018.  

He was the son of the late Viola Pierson Messick and Milton Edward Messick.  After graduating from P.S. DuPont High School and the Eckels College of Mortuary Science, Charles worked for a short time at Chandler’s as a mortician.  He then began his career at the DuPont Company where he worked for 33 years in sales and purchasing before retiring at the age of 58.  Charles lived a very full life with his wife Dorothy, “Dot”.  

When his children were young, he was known to come home from sales road trips with any number of surprises; baby alligator, ducklings, turtles, etc.  His first priority was always his family. He and Dot spent many wonderful times with their children and grandchildren in Ocean City, NJ and Camden, ME.  As a young man, Charles was an active member of the Masons and rose to the 32nd Degree.  An army veteran himself, he volunteered for many years at the Wilmington Veterans Hospital.  He was an avid gardener and could be found working in his gardens whenever weather permitted.  Charlie loved going to auctions and was an enthusiastic collector OF EVERYTHING.  

Charles is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Bush Messick, his daughter, Joan Messick Frain and her husband, Stephen, son, Charles “Chip” K. Messick, 2nd and his wife, Linda; his 5 grandchildren, Stephen (Grace), Elizabeth (Nick), Caitlin, Ryan, and Elyse and his 4 great-grandchildren, Alexa, Logan, Arthur and Charles.  Charles was one of a kind, was much loved and will be missed greatly.

Services will be held on Thursday, April 5 at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek with visitation starting at 11:15 followed by services at 11:45.
