Charles Curtis May, Sr., age 85 of Newark, DE passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family, on Friday, March 17, 2017.

Chuck was born in Coatesville, PA on November 24, 1931, son of the late Reginald and Elizabeth (Hopton) May, and was raised in Claymont, DE.  As a graduate of Claymont High School, class of 1950, he was the starting quarterback of his undefeated football team.  At the time, the team was known as the greatest to ever don the purple and gold.   From 1951 to 1953, Chuck proudly served our country as a Sonar Technician for the United States Navy during the Korean War.  After his military service, he was employed by the Diamond State Telephone Company (Bell Atlantic) and retired in 1992 after 38 years of dedicated service.  He was a past president of the Diamond State Telephone Athletic Association and a member of Telephone Pioneers of America.  Chuck had a very full and rich life spending time with family and friends.  He truly enjoyed fishing, golfing, traveling, collecting unique antiques, watching the horse racing at Delaware Park, and attending Blue Hen football games with his lifelong friends.  He was also a faithful member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, where he served as a Trustee.

Chuck was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather.  He was so very proud of his grandchildren and all of their accomplishments; they were one of his greatest joys.  He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife of more than 61 years, Jennie (Papa) May; his children, Sharon Blau (Paul), Linda Montini (Jerry), Susan Harris (Richard), and Charles “Chuck” May, Jr. (Lori); his eight grandchildren, Nate Blau, Tessa and Jonathon Montini, Kelsey and Bradley Harris, Logan, Cameron and Charlie May, many nieces, nephews and their families.  Chuck was predeceased by his siblings, Reginald May, Albert May, Marjorie Palmer, Dorothy Patterson, and James Hopton.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Alfonso Ciarlo, Dr. George Davis, and Dr. Miroslaw Zdunek, the physicians and staff of Seasons Hospice, family, friends and neighbors for their loving care and support.

Family and friends are invited to the visitation at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 525 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark, on Thursday, March 23 from 9:30-11:00AM.  Funeral services will begin at 11:00AM, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.
