Charles M. Fischer

Charles M. Fischer, PhD, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, May 4, 2017. He was 75.

Born in Buffalo, New York, on September 28, 1941, Chuck was a graduate of Bishop Timon High School and a loyal and life-long Buffalo Bills fan.  

He earned degrees from St. Bonaventure University, Canisius College, University of Montana (Missoula), and University of Texas at Austin

Chuck worked as a chemist for the Food and Drug Administration and at The DuPont Company. Following retirement, he began a second career as an educator at St. Mark’s High School where he taught math, physical science and honor’s chemistry.

Chuck was a big supporter of youth sports. For years, he spent his free time coaching CYO boys’ basketball at St. John the Beloved Parish and baseball for Midway Little League and New Castle Babe Ruth.

He was predeceased by his parents, Charles Fischer and Mildred Gorman Fischer; and his sister, Marilyn Matthewson.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Linda; his daughter, Kim Marie Fischer; his son-in-law, Anthony Lopez-Ona; his son, Charles Michael Fischer Jr.; his daughter-in-law, Brigid Leahy Fischer; his nephew and wife, Christopher and Betsy Matthewson and their four children: Will, Emma, Meghan and Mary.

The apples of Chuck’s eye were his six grandchildren: Adeline Fischer, 16; Claudia Lopez-Ona, 15; Gabriella Lopez-Ona, 15; Marissa Lopez-Ona, 15; Mitchell Fischer, 15; and Owen Fischer, 13.

Papa, as he was called by his grandchildren, will be remembered for his big heart and his sense of humor.

Please join the family for a celebration of Chuck’s life at The Christiana Hilton, 100 Continental Drive, Newark, Delaware 19713 on Monday, May 15 from 6:00-8:00PM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Sherwood Park, on Tuesday, May 16 at 10:30AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN (www.stjude.org).
